DAY TWO - SILVER BIRCH AWARDS - Express, Fiction, Non-Fiction

I am so disappointed in my blog. I have not posted here for so long, and so much has been happening this past term, I will attempt in the next two months to catch up all the exciting and interesting events, work and projects that have been worked on at Chine and the Learning Commons in particular. Well, I just checked in with Ken Oppel; he last posted one month ago, then hadn't posted since 5 months before that. Now I don't feel that bad. Here now, the news about why I have been so side-tracked from posting...
WILLY WONKA JR!!!

I am one of 3 staff supervisors of our school musical production staging next week. I have always loved theatre, it comes from the literary works of thousands of our published authors. The extension of taking literary words and having our students memorize and perform the stories on stage, is an astounding and amazing undertaking.

Extra-curricular participation is volunteer work on the teachers' part. I have spent every Wednesday after school from 3:30 to 6pm overseeing our students (when I wasn't at at hockey practice or hockey game with our team). So far, this work has taken about 35 hours. Then there is the gathering and tracking the collection of props and costumes for each student.  For the creation of certain props and costumes, gathering materials, shopping for materials, crafting, cutting, gluing and sewing. About another 15 hours of volunteer hours. As we go into the performance week, I have to plan around the evening being at work:
- there will be 2 full dress rehearsals after school, 3.5 hours each
- plus the 2 evening performances, which will go roughly from 5 to 9pm.

I am not complaining, don't get me wrong. People just need to really take into account the hours of unpaid service that thousands of teachers are putting in the time to ensure that students get the opportunity and benefit of participating in school productions. I applaud the amazing musically talented and theatrically inspired teachers of the world who continue to go the extra hours for the communities they work in.

Break a leg Chine students! Can't wait to see the results of our work. Will post pictures soon.

Ice Hockey Practice for Chine Grade 7 - 8 team

Yes, I am reporting on the latest crazy passion of mine... I now attend 2 hockey school lessons per week, so I'm feeling much more comfortable in my equipment and skating. Supervising and organizing this team has been hectic to say the least. In all my Teacher-Librarian experiences, this has to rank very high... one of the most exciting extra-curricular sports I ever supervised.

Today was the second practice held at McGregor Arena for our grade 7-8 hockey team. I am so thrilled to be part of this group as their supervisor.  Passing skills are coming along, and today... I SCORED A GOAL ON DAIN, our fantastic goalie... he let one slip by!

I'm so proud of the whole team, they worked very hard on drills and a practice game. We're so lucky and thankful to have TWO DADS who are our ice coaches leading the students. Thanks go out to our parent volunteers - Mr. Rick Froner and Mr. Steve Blankley!!  Thanks also to our principal,
Mrs. Kanellos-Mavraganis for all her cheering and support behind the scenes.

Hockey is ME!

Well it certainly has been one hectic first term at Chine Drive! I have been Choir conductor. Our Choir sang beautifully at the Remembrance Day Assembly. I am helping Mlle Asselin coach the Girls' Grade 5 -6  Volleyball team, and one AMAZING DEVELOPMENT... I have taken on the Chine Hockey Team responsibilities. We have 2 parents who will be the ice coaches, I will be the "GM" (General Manager)

After I  dropped by to see our 2 rookie players participate in the TDSB Hockey Clinic, I was challenged by the TDSB athletic staff to "LACE UP!" so I DID!!! Thanks to our friend Liz Pead, Hockey player and Hockey artiste extraodinaire, who lent me the Hockey equipment, I was able to participate in my very first Hockey lesson. I was so excited by that day of skating and hockey skills playing, I was invited by Liz to drop by and see her Hockey school... so... I am now a Hockey Student and hopefully will improve my skills as our students do... although many of our students already have Double AA playing abilities, I know I will never catch up, but I hope to improve and make it a life long sport to enjoy!
