VOTING!!! Silver Birch Club 2011 CELEBRATE!!! authors, books and US!! THE READERS!!!
Silver Birch Voting day came and went last Wednesday, April 13th at Chine Drive with great HOOPLA!! Cake, sushi, fresh fruit, cheese & crackers, nachos & dip... And VOTE THEY DID!!! Our Silver Birch Club readers put in their ballots for their favourite book of 2011. Our party was a great success, as was the reading, the books and the amazing Canadian authors & illustrators who were part of OLA's greatest reading program. OLA SUPER dee duper CONFERENCE!!!
The highlight of every librarian's year is just around the corner... Over 5,000 librarians from all over Canada and the United States will be converging on the Toronto Convention Centre this week.
Mrs. Dassios has the privilege of being the Vice-Chair of the Forest of Reading Programs for Ontario. There will be many opportunities to meet fantastic Canadian writers. Stay tuned for all the news on the new publications for Kids' books!

Silver Birch Reading Club @ Noon Updates
Silver Birch Updates from Mrs. Dassios:
Today we held our Silver Birch meeting in the Learning Commons today at noonhour. We discussed more of the Silver Birch books, the Fiction, Non-Fiction and Express titles. Last week's winner of a poster was Reese. Today's winner of a poster was Emelia.
For the first time, the students had the opportunity to go on the Internet to explore the books, authors and biographies on the Silver Birch website organized by the Ontario Library Association (OLA). Students started writing letters to their authors, which they will email to them and hopefully receive replies in the near future.

We discovered an interesting series of videos on Youtube.com

Eric says of the site, "The Youtube website has videos about the books. They are made byCitizenkidstrailors. Today I watched How to Build Your own Country, by Valerie Wyatt. It was telling you like the steps in a short way. The voice was by kids. It was kind of like, It wasn't too much like the book because it has some different steps. It didn't have some of the steps.. like make your own passport."
Students can access both sites from home.

Happy New Year! (Belated,sorry!)
Happy New Year Chine Drive readers!
It has been super busy start to 2010, as we have been preparing for THREE reading programs @ Chine Library.

The Blue Spruce program for Grades Kindergarten to Grade 3 is off to a spectacular start. The classes have already heard Mrs. Dassios read 2 nominated books, Boo Hoo Bird, by previously nominated, very talented author and illustrator Jeremy Tankard. Second book was Bradley McGogg, the Very Fine Frog, by the first time author, Tim Beiser and illustrator Rachel Berman. The Kindies really enjoyed creating an illustration reflection on their experience of the books. The Grade 1,2 and 3 classes will be using a Memory Book to record their thoughts and illustrations. 8 books, and 8 weeks to go! Who will you vote for???
The Silver Birch Club meets Tuesdays at noonhour @ Chine Library. Many students from Grades 2-6 have had the opportunity to borrow books and started reading just before the Winter Break. Mrs. Daskalakis has been keenly reading and meeting with us. The Silver Birch Memory books will be ready to go home this week.
The Grade 7-8 classes have started reading in groups from a selection of 10 nominated Red Maple books. They will meet weekly to reflect and study the novels in 6 sessions. The students will all have a TDSB email account, which will permit them to join the Red Maple WIKI for Chine Drive. We have coordinated a WIKI online, where the students will have an opportunity to logon and post their reflections and responses to classmates postings. Parents may monitor postings, but only students can participate to the discussions as teachers admininster the site.
